I love pottering about in the garden but am not a proficient gardener. We only mow the lawn between November and Christmas and let the wild flowers reign for the rest of the year to help the wildlife. We don't use any herbicides, pesticides, artificial fertilisers or poisons and like the garden to be 'managed' as little as possible. We are having a new fence erected next week which will create a metre wide border and I am looking to plant shrubs that will provide food and shelter for moths, butterflies, bees and insects. We have mature beech trees so there is a lot of shade but we are also protected from strong winds as we are completely enclosed.
